Best Steel Tiffin Box for Office
Updated 4 November 2026
Almost every office tiffin in India is sold as "leak-proof". Almost none of them are, for thin dal. The ones that survive a daily commute do it with a silicone gasket and four clips — not with a plastic lid pressed on tight.
This guide separates the two things people actually care about: whether the box will spill in your bag, and whether lunch is still warm at 1 pm. Those pull in opposite directions, which is why the picks below split into clip-lock boxes for gravy and insulated sets for hot rotis.
One thing to know before you read the prices: the steel is only the container. Every lid in this list is food-grade plastic, and "insulated" almost always means a fabric jacket, not a thermos.

Milton Tasty 3 Lunch Box with Insulated Jacket — 3 Steel Containers (210, 340, 500 ml)
3 steel containers · 210 + 340 + 500 ml · Insulated fabric jacket
Best for: The standard office lunch — roti, sabzi and rice in one bag
- Three graduated sizes cover a full meal: the 500 ml for rice or curry, the 340 ml for sabzi, the 210 ml for chutney or salad.
- Insulated fabric jacket keeps it warm for the morning commute, and the whole set stacks into one compact bag.
- BPA-free lids and 100% stainless steel containers at a price that leaves room for a second set.
Watch out: There is no clip-lock on the containers — it will hold sabzi and roti fine, but thin dal belongs in the clip-lock pick below.
Approx. ₹541

Borosil PUF Insulated Steel Lunch Box with Bag — 3 Containers + Steel Plates
3 steel containers (280 × 2 + 180 ml) + 3 steel plates + bag · Double-wall PUF
Best for: Lunch that has to still be warm hours later
- Double-wall PUF insulation holds heat far longer than the fabric jackets on the cheaper sets.
- Includes stainless steel plates, so you can eat off the lid instead of hunting for a plate in the office pantry.
- The most-reviewed tiffin on this list — over 6,000 ratings, which is a useful signal at 4.0.
Watch out: Roughly twice the price of a fabric-jacket set, and it is not a thermos — expect warm, not hot, after four hours.
Approx. ₹1,039

Milton Executive Lunch Box — 2 Steel Containers + Microwave-Safe Oval Container
2 steel (280 ml) + 1 microwave-safe oval (450 ml) · Insulated jacket
Best for: Offices with a microwave and a queue at 1 pm
- The 450 ml oval container is microwave-safe, so you reheat rice or curry in the container instead of transferring it.
- Two steel containers for the sabzi and roti that should not be microwaved.
- Under ₹350 — the cheapest way to get a reheatable container in a proper set.
Watch out: Only the oval plastic container goes in the microwave. Never put the steel ones in, and remove the lid before reheating.
Approx. ₹343

Nayasa Eco Duplex 3 Steel Lunch Box Set with Insulated Bag
2 × 350 ml + 640 ml roti dabba + bag · Insulated
Best for: A proper home-style thali with a full stack of rotis
- The 640 ml oval dabba holds 6–7 rotis flat, which is the one thing most 3-container sets get wrong.
- Two 350 ml containers for sabzi and dal, plus stainless steel plates on top of the containers for serving.
- Rated 4.2, and the set comes with its own insulated bag.
Watch out: The lids are secure but not clip-lock — treat it as spill-proof for thick gravies, not for thin dal.
Approx. ₹739

Milton Daily Meal Lunch Box — 3 Steel Containers (300 ml) + 400 ml Tumbler
3 × 300 ml + 400 ml steel tumbler · Insulated bag
Best for: Anyone who carries rice, dal, sabzi and buttermilk
- Three equal 300 ml containers plus a 400 ml steel tumbler — the only set here that covers a drink as well.
- Everything is steel, including the tumbler, with an insulated fabric bag to carry it all.
- Equal-sized containers are easier to pack and clean than graduated sets.
Watch out: Three 300 ml containers are tight if you eat a lot of rice — the 500 ml container in the Tasty 3 fits a bigger portion.
Approx. ₹600

Milton New Mini Lunch Box — 2 Steel Containers (280 ml) with Insulated Jacket
2 × 280 ml · Insulated fabric jacket
Best for: A roti-and-sabzi lunch, or a second box for a child
- Two 280 ml containers are enough for a light lunch, and the set stays light enough to carry all day.
- Insulated jacket at a price where most tiffins give you bare steel.
- Small enough to fit inside a laptop bag instead of carrying a separate lunch bag.
Watch out: Too small for rice, dal and sabzi together — this is a light-lunch box, not a full thali.
Approx. ₹228

Neelam Stainless Steel Lunch Box with Locking Clip — 2-Tier, 800 ml
2 tiers · 800 ml total · Locking clip · Leak-resistant
Best for: Carrying gravy without decorating your bag
- The locking clip pulls the lid down on both tiers, which is the one design that actually resists thin dal.
- 800 ml across two stacked tiers — a compact shape that fits in a side pocket.
- Under ₹250, and stainless steel all the way through with retractable handles.
Watch out: The lowest-rated pick here at 3.8, and a clip is not a guarantee — do the water-shake test before you trust it with dal.

Spill-proof is not the same as leak-proof
A tiffin with a plain lid and a plastic rim will hold roti and sabzi all day. Put dal in it and it will find the gap on the first pothole. What actually holds liquid is a silicone gasket seated inside the lid plus clips that pull the lid down evenly on all sides.
Before you trust any box, fill it a third of the way with water, close it, and shake it over the sink. Do that twice before you put lunch in it. It takes ten seconds and saves a bag full of dal.
If you carry gravy daily, buy a clip-lock box and keep it for dal only. If your lunch is roti, sabzi and a dry preparation, a plainer box with a good gasket is enough and easier to wash.
How much lunch is 300 ml?
Container sizes in these sets are smaller than they look. A 280–300 ml container holds one katori of sabzi or dal. A 450–500 ml container holds a full portion of rice or a curry for one person. A 640 ml oval dabba holds six to seven rotis.
That means a 3 × 300 ml set is a complete lunch for one person — two sabzis and rice, or dal, sabzi and roti. If you eat one big meal, look at the 450–500 ml containers. If you eat small portions through the day, the 2 × 280 ml sets are enough and much lighter to carry.
| Capacity | Holds roughly | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 280–300 ml | One katori of sabzi or dal | Light eaters, side dishes in a bigger set |
| 450–500 ml | Rice or curry for one | A main meal in a single container |
| 640 ml oval | 6–7 rotis | Anyone carrying chapatis separately |
| 2–3 tiers stacked | A full lunch for one | The standard office set |
Does the insulated jacket do anything?
A fabric jacket with a foil lining keeps food warm for roughly two hours, which is enough if you leave home at 9 and eat at 11:30 — not if you eat at 2. A double-wall PUF-insulated set holds heat noticeably longer, and costs about twice as much.
If your office has a microwave, do not pay for insulation. Buy a set with a microwave-safe container and reheat there — the food will be hotter than any jacket can keep it. And never put a steel container in a microwave, whatever the listing title suggests: only the plastic container in a set is meant for that.
Making a steel tiffin last
Stainless steel does not rust from water — it rusts from food left in it. Wash and dry the containers the same evening, and do not store sour food like curd or tamarind overnight in a closed box.
The lid gasket is the part that fails first. If a box starts leaking after a year, check whether the gasket is stretched or has food stuck under it before you replace the whole set. Keep the lids off when stored so the rubber does not take a permanent smell.
Questions we get asked
Are steel tiffin boxes really leak-proof?
Mostly they are spill-proof. A silicone gasket plus clips will hold thick gravies; thin dal can still escape. Fill it a third with water, close it and shake it over the sink before you trust a new box with liquid.
Can I put a steel tiffin in the microwave?
No. Metal cannot go in a microwave. Some sets include one plastic microwave-safe container — only that one is meant for reheating, and the lid should come off first.
How much food fits in a 300 ml container?
Roughly one katori of sabzi or dal. Three 300 ml containers make a full lunch for one person; 450–500 ml containers hold a full portion of rice or curry.
Insulated tiffin or a plain steel one?
If your office has a microwave, buy plain or a set with a microwave-safe container — reheating beats insulation. If it does not, a PUF-insulated set keeps food warm for hours longer than a fabric jacket.
How do I stop a steel tiffin from smelling?
Wash and dry it the same evening, keep the lids off while stored, and do not leave curd or sour food in a closed box overnight. The smell usually lives in the rubber gasket, not the steel.
