Best Idli Cooker
Updated 5 November 2026
An idli cooker is one of the few kitchen purchases where the cheapest option genuinely works. It is a stainless steel pot, a stack of perforated plates and a lid. There is no motor, no coating and nothing to calibrate.
What changes with price is capacity and induction compatibility. A two-plate cooker makes eight idlis, which is breakfast for two. A four-plate cooker makes sixteen, enough for a family of four with leftovers. If you cook on an induction cooktop, the base has to be flat and magnetic — not every steel idli cooker is.
The six picks here range from ₹389 for spare plates to ₹1,358 for a four-plate Pigeon. Prices were checked on the date shown and ratings read from each listing.

Judge by Prestige Stainless Steel Idli Cooker, 4 Plates
4 plates · 16 idlis · Stainless steel · Gas and induction
Best for: A family that makes idli once or twice a week
- Four plates and a 1-litre base from a Prestige sub-brand, with the widest service network in this guide.
- Stainless steel throughout, so there is no coating to scratch and nothing to replace except the plates.
- Works on both gas and induction, which matters if you are moving between the two.
Watch out: The tallest cooker here, and the most expensive. Measure the clearance under your wall cabinets before ordering.
Approx. ₹1,149

Pigeon Classic Stainless Steel Idli Cooker, 4 Plates, Whistle Indicator
4 plates · Whistle indicator · Heat-resistant handles · Gas, hot plate, induction
Best for: Anyone who wants a clear steam signal without lifting the lid
- The whistle indicator tells you steam has started without opening the lid and losing heat.
- Heat-resistant handles are a real safety improvement over bare steel handles on a hot cooker.
- Porous plates circulate steam evenly, which is what stops idlis being dense at the edges.
Watch out: Highest price and a 3.8 rating. The whistle is an indicator, not a pressure feature — do not expect faster cooking.
Approx. ₹1,358

Unify Stainless Steel Idli Cooker, 4 Plates, Sandwich Bottom
4 plates · 16 idlis · Sandwich bottom · Gas and induction · Heat-resistant handle
Best for: Even heat on a thin-bottomed induction cooktop
- A sandwich bottom spreads heat more evenly than a thin steel base, which reduces the chance of idlis sticking at the centre.
- Four plates and sixteen idlis at ₹949 undercuts the branded cookers by a few hundred rupees.
- The fitted lid and stackable plates are easy to handle when hot.
Watch out: Generic brand with no service network. Check the plates for dents on arrival — a bent plate is hard to replace locally.

Lifelong Idli Cooker, 3 Plates, 12 Idlis
3 plates · 12 idlis · Stainless steel · 19 × 19 × 15 cm · Gas and induction
Best for: Three or four people in a kitchen with low cabinets
- Twelve idlis is the right batch for three or four people, and the shorter body fits under low cabinets.
- At ₹549 it costs less than half a branded four-plate cooker.
- Comes with a stand and steel lid, so nothing else is needed to start cooking.
Watch out: 1.06 kg empty and 15 cm tall — check that the lid clears your chimney or wall cabinet. Generic brand, so inspect the finish.
Approx. ₹549

Next Future Idli Steamer, 2 Plates, 8 Idlis
2 plates · 8 idlis · 22 × 22 × 10 cm · 0.8 kg · Gas and induction
Best for: A couple or a small induction setup
- Only 10 cm tall, so it fits where a four-plate cooker cannot, including a small induction setup.
- The lightest cooker here at 0.8 kg, which makes it easy to lift and clean.
- Eight idlis is a sensible batch for a couple — no leftovers going cold.
Watch out: Two plates means cooking twice for a family of four. The thin gauge will dent if it is dropped.
Approx. ₹445

Crystal Stainless Steel Idli Plates, 4 × 4
4 plates · 16 idli moulds · High-grade stainless steel · Replacement set
Best for: Replacing bent plates without buying a new cooker
- Four plates for ₹389 is cheaper than replacing a whole cooker when one plate bends.
- Evenly spaced holes give consistent steam flow, which is what makes idlis cook at the same rate.
- Fits standard round idli cookers, so it works as a spare set for almost any brand.
Watch out: Plates only — no pot, stand or lid. Check the diameter against your cooker before ordering.
Approx. ₹389

How many plates do you need?
Each plate holds four idlis in a standard round cooker. Two plates give eight idlis, three give twelve, four give sixteen. A family of four eating idli for breakfast usually finishes twelve to sixteen, so a four-plate cooker is the safe default.
More plates means a taller cooker, and a taller cooker needs a taller lid and more water in the base. That is fine on a gas hob but can be awkward under a low wall cabinet or on a small induction plate. Measure the height before buying a four-plate model.
Spare plates are worth buying at the same time. Plates bend if they are stacked wet, and a bent plate makes idlis that are thick on one side. The ₹389 Crystal set of four plates is a cheap way to keep a cooker running.
| Plates | Idlis per batch | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 8 | Couples, small households |
| 3 | 12 | Three to four people |
| 4 | 16 | Families, batch cooking for the week |
Induction, gas and the whistle question
Check the base before buying for induction. A cooker listed as induction-compatible has a flat, magnetic base; a thin steel pot that works on gas may not heat at all on an induction cooktop. All the cookers here except the spare plates are listed for both gas and induction.
A whistle indicator is not a pressure cooker feature. On an idli cooker it is a small whistle in the lid that signals steam is flowing — useful for timing, but it does not pressurise the pot. Do not expect pressure-cooker speed.
Steam for 10–12 minutes after the water comes to a boil, then rest for two minutes before opening. Opening early gives idlis that stick to the plate; resting lets them release cleanly.
Questions we get asked
How many idlis does a 4-plate cooker make?
Sixteen, four per plate. That is enough for four people with a few left over, and it is the most common size sold in India.
Can I use an idli cooker on an induction cooktop?
Only if the base is flat and magnetic. Check the listing for induction compatibility — a gas-only steel cooker will not heat on induction even though it looks like it should.
Why do my idlis stick to the plates?
Usually the plates were not oiled, the batter was too thin, or the idlis were removed too early. Grease the plates lightly, keep the batter thick enough to coat a spoon, and rest two minutes after steaming.
