Best Extension Board
Updated 5 November 2026
An extension board is the cheapest safety device in the house and the most commonly overloaded one. The difference between a good board and a bad one is not the number of sockets — it is whether it has real surge protection, a proper 6 A or 16 A rating, and cable thick enough to carry the load without heating.
Most Indian homes run a 6 A circuit, which caps a board at around 1,400 W. That is a laptop, a monitor, a router and a phone charger with room to spare — but not a heater, a geyser, an iron or a microwave. Those need a 16 A point, not a spike guard.
The eight picks here range from a ₹299 six-socket board to a ₹1,699 Belkin with 13,000 A spike capacity. Prices were checked on the date shown and ratings read from each listing.

FEDUS 6-Socket Surge Protector with Individual Switches, 5 m
6 universal sockets · Individual switches · 5 m cable · Child safety shutters
Best for: A desk or TV unit that needs reach and control
- Individual switches mean you can turn off the set-top box and console without unplugging them.
- The 5 m cable is twice the length of most boards here — enough to cross a room without another extension.
- Child safety shutters and an eight-layer safety listing covering surge, overload and short circuit.
Watch out: The most expensive 6-socket board here. If you only need 2 m, the Anchor at half the price does the same job.

Belkin 6-Socket Extension Board with Surge Protector, 2 m
6 sockets · 13,000 A max spike current · 3-line protection · 2 m cable
Best for: Protecting a desktop, TV or router worth more than the board
- 13,000 A maximum spike current is the highest rated protection in this guide, with all six sockets grounded through three-line protection.
- Belkin has been making surge protectors for decades and the build quality reflects it — thick cable, firm sockets, no wobble.
- The right choice when the devices behind the board cost more than the board ever will.
Watch out: Only a 2 m cable, and the most expensive pick here. No USB ports.

Portronics Power Plate 7, 8 Sockets + 6 USB Ports
8 power sockets · 6 USB ports · 2500 W · 2 m cable
Best for: A desk shared by several phones and laptops
- Eight sockets plus six USB ports covers phones, tablets and laptops without a separate charger for each.
- Rated to 2,500 W, so it can handle more than a basic 6 A board.
- At ₹799 it is the best socket-per-rupee in this guide.
Watch out: USB ports share a 2.1 A total output, so charging six phones at once is slow. The 2,500 W rating still does not make it suitable for a heater.
Approx. ₹799

Portronics Power Plate 6, 5 Sockets + 4 USB Ports
5 power sockets · 4 USB ports · 2500 W · 2 m cable
Best for: A narrow desk that still needs USB charging
- A smaller version of the Power Plate 7 that fits on a narrow desk or behind a TV without hanging off the edge.
- Four USB ports cover a phone, a tablet and two accessories with one board.
- 2500 W rating gives headroom over a standard 6 A spike guard.
Watch out: Five sockets can fill up fast in a family home. USB output is shared, not per-port fast charging.
Approx. ₹799

Anchor by Panasonic 6-Socket Spike Guard, 2 m
6 universal sockets · Master switch · MOV surge protection · 1440 W · 2 m
Best for: Everyday low-draw devices on a budget
- Anchor is the most widely available switch brand in India, so this is the easiest board here to find in a local shop.
- MOV surge protection at ₹498, with a stated 1,440 W capacity that matches a standard 6 A circuit.
- Universal sockets accept Indian and imported plugs without an adapter.
Watch out: One master switch rather than individual switches, so everything on the board goes off together.

Hoteon Extension Board with USB-C and Individual Switches
2 universal sockets · 3 USB-A · 1 USB-C · PD 20 W · Individual switches
Best for: A bedside table with a phone to fast-charge
- The only board here with USB-C Power Delivery at up to 20 W, which charges a modern phone or tablet properly.
- Individual switches for each socket and a short 4.2 cm plug body that sits flush against the wall.
- A good fit for a bedside table where you want two plugs and fast phone charging.
Watch out: Only two universal sockets, so it is a charging board rather than a multi-device power strip. Expensive for what it is.
Approx. ₹1,699

Elegant Casa 6 A + 16 A Extension Board with Switches
2 × 16 A sockets · 2 × 6 A sockets · Individual switches · Indicator light
Best for: A heater or iron that needs a genuine 16 A point
- The only pick here with proper 16 A sockets, which is what a heater, iron or geyser actually needs.
- Individual switches and indicator lights make it obvious which point is live.
- A safer alternative to plugging a high-draw appliance into a 6 A spike guard.
Watch out: A 3.9–4.0 class rating and a generic brand. Confirm the cable gauge and plug top are genuinely 16 A before using it with a heater.
Approx. ₹1,259

6-Socket Extension Board with Surge Protection, 2 m
6 universal sockets · Surge protector · Overload protection · 2 m cable
Best for: Lamps, routers and chargers on a spare board
- Six sockets and surge protection for ₹299 — the lowest price in this guide by a wide margin.
- Overload cut-off and a heavy-duty 2 m cable are listed, which is more than most boards at this price offer.
- Fine as a spare board for lamps, routers and chargers.
Watch out: The 5.0 rating comes from a very small review base, so it is not evidence of quality. Buy only for low-draw devices, and check the plug and cable on arrival.
Approx. ₹299

Work out the load before you plug anything in
Add up the wattage of everything you plan to connect, then compare it with the board’s rating. A 6 A board at 240 V is rated for 1,440 W; a 16 A board for about 3,800 W. Laptops, routers, monitors, lamps and phone chargers together rarely cross 400 W, which is why a standard board is fine for a desk.
High-draw appliances are a different category. A 2,000 W room heater, a geyser, an iron or a microwave will melt a 6 A board even if the board has six sockets and looks sturdy. Use a 16 A board with a 16 A plug top, or a dedicated wall point.
Never daisy-chain boards — one extension board plugged into another. Each connection adds resistance, and resistance at a plug is heat.
| Appliance | Typical draw | Board needed |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop, monitor, router, phone | 100–250 W | 6 A standard board |
| TV, set-top box, console | 150–400 W | 6 A standard board |
| Room heater, iron, geyser | 1,000–2,000 W | 16 A board, dedicated point |
| Microwave or induction cooktop | 1,200–2,000 W | 16 A board, not a spike guard |
What real surge protection looks like
Surge protection is measured in joules or in maximum spike current. Belkin rates its board at 13,000 A of maximum spike current with three-line protection; that is a specification, not a marketing phrase. Boards that say only "surge protected" without a number are difficult to evaluate.
MOV (metal oxide varistor) technology is what does the work. It absorbs a voltage spike once and degrades; a very large surge can sacrifice the board to protect the devices, which is the intended behaviour.
Physical safety features matter as much: child safety shutters, individual switches so you can isolate one device, a fire-retardant casing and a grounded three-pin plug. The cheapest boards here still include shutters or overload cut-off — check before buying one that does not.
Questions we get asked
Can I run a room heater on an extension board?
Only on a 16 A board rated for at least 2,000 W, and never coiled. A standard 6 A spike guard will overheat. A heater is best on a dedicated wall socket.
Does an extension board protect against lightning?
A surge-protected board absorbs small spikes and some mains surges, but it is not lightning protection. During a thunderstorm, unplug expensive electronics.
Why does my extension board get warm?
Either the load is close to its rating or a plug is making poor contact. Unplug everything, check the rating against the load, and replace the board if a socket feels loose or discoloured.
