Best Dosa Tawa

Updated 5 November 2026

A dosa tawa is a simple piece of metal with one job: hold an even temperature across 28 cm so the batter sets at the same rate everywhere. A thin tawa gives you a pale centre and a burnt edge; a heavy one gives you a dosa that lifts in one piece.

Two things decide whether a tawa works in your kitchen: the base (gas only or induction-compatible) and the coating. A flat non-stick surface is easier for a beginner; a well-seasoned cast-iron tawa gives a better crust but needs more care. Everything here is non-stick aluminium.

These seven are all 28 cm, with prices checked on the date shown and ratings read from each listing. If you have an induction cooktop, buy one of the induction-base models — the others are gas only.

1. Best overallRated 4.4 / 5 on Amazon

Hawkins Futura 28 cm Dosa Tava, Non-Stick (NDT28)

28 cm · Non-stick · Hard-anodised base · German coating

Best for: A dosa tawa that will survive years of daily use

  • The highest-rated tawa here at 4.4, and Hawkins’ hard-anodised base is the most durable in this list.
  • The non-stick coating is locked into the hard-anodised surface underneath, which is why it resists scratching better than coated aluminium.
  • A heavy base holds heat evenly, so dosas brown consistently rather than in patches.

Watch out: The most expensive pick at ₹1,402, and it is gas-only — not for an induction cooktop.

Approx. ₹1,402

2. Best valueRated 4.2 / 5 on Amazon

Judge by Prestige 28 cm Non-Stick Tawa

28 cm · Non-stick · PFOA-free · Cool-touch handle

Best for: Everyday dosas and chapatis on a budget

  • A thick aluminium body for even heat, at ₹625 — less than half the Hawkins.
  • PFOA-free coating, and the listing says it is free of lead and cadmium as well.
  • Cool-touch handles and a 4.2 rating from a brand with wide service coverage.

Watch out: Gas-only, and the coating will not last as long as the hard-anodised Hawkins under daily high heat.

3. Best induction-compatibleRated 4.2 / 5 on Amazon

Prestige Omega Deluxe Granite Dosa Tawa, 28 cm, Induction Base

28 cm · Granite non-stick · Induction base · 2-year warranty

Best for: An induction cooktop and a gas stove in the same kitchen

  • An induction base plus a granite-effect non-stick surface, so it works on both cooktops.
  • A 2.8 mm base holds heat well, and the 2-year warranty is the longest here.
  • Granite-look coating is more forgiving of a slightly high flame than a plain non-stick surface.

Watch out: Heavier than the plain aluminium tawas, and the granite finish needs the same gentle cleaning as any non-stick.

4. Best scratch-resistantRated 4.1 / 5 on Amazon

Prestige Non-Stick Dosa Tawa, 27.5 cm, Metal-Spoon Friendly

27.5 cm · Gas and induction · PFOA-free · Metal-spoon friendly

Best for: A house where everyone uses a steel spatula

  • The listing explicitly says metal-spoon friendly and scratch-resistant — rare at this price and useful if your family will not use silicone.
  • Works on both gas and induction, so it survives a cooktop change.
  • A 27.5 cm surface is close enough to 28 cm for standard dosas.

Watch out: “Metal-spoon friendly” is a manufacturer claim — still avoid scraping hard, and never cut dosas in the pan.

5. Best heavy baseRated 4.1 / 5 on Amazon

Wonderchef Duralite Die-Cast 28 cm Dosa Tawa

28 cm · Die-cast aluminium · 5-layer non-stick · Soft-touch handle

Best for: Even browning on a slightly uneven flame

  • Die-cast aluminium holds its shape and spreads heat more evenly than pressed aluminium.
  • A five-layer non-stick coating, which is more layers than most tawas at this price.
  • A soft-touch handle that stays cool during a long dosa session.

Watch out: Gas-only, and die-cast tawas are heavier — not the one for a weak wrist or a small burner.

Approx. ₹899

6. Best for storageRated 4 / 5 on Amazon

Cello 28 cm Non-Stick Dosa Tawa, Induction Base, Detachable Handle

28 cm · Induction base · PFOA-free · Detachable handle

Best for: A small kitchen where the tawa has to go in a drawer

  • The detachable handle lets the tawa store flat, which matters in a kitchen with no spare cabinet height.
  • An induction base plus PFOA-free coating at ₹549 — the cheapest induction-ready tawa here.
  • A heavy-duty aluminium base for even heat.

Watch out: Rated 4.0, and a detachable handle is one more joint to keep tight — check it before each use.

7. Best for uttapam and thick dosasRated 3.9 / 5 on Amazon

Judge by Prestige 28 cm Concave Tawa

28 cm · Concave · Non-stick · PFOA-free

Best for: Uttapam, set dosa and thick pancakes

  • A concave surface holds oil and batter towards the centre, which suits uttapam and thick dosas better than a flat tawa.
  • PFOA-free non-stick coating with even heat distribution.
  • A cool-touch handle and a low price for a second, specialist tawa.

Watch out: Concave means thin, crisp dosas are harder — this is a second tawa, not your only one.

Approx. ₹610

Why 28 cm is the default

28 cm is the size most dosa recipes and most Indian kitchens assume. It fits a standard gas burner, gives a dosa long enough to fold, and still stores in a normal cabinet. Smaller tawas make small dosas; anything above 30 cm needs a large burner to heat evenly.

Thickness matters more than diameter for even cooking. A 2.8 mm base holds heat through the pour and the flip; a thin base spikes and drops with every dosa. If the listing gives a base thickness, prefer 2.5 mm or more.

Check the base type before buying. An induction-compatible tawa has a steel plate bonded into the aluminium; a gas-only tawa does not, and will not heat on an induction cooktop at all.

Making the coating last

Non-stick dosa tawas fail in one of two ways: the coating scratches, or it is overheated empty. Use a wooden or silicone spatula unless the listing explicitly says metal-spoon friendly, and never leave the tawa on a high flame with nothing on it.

Heat the tawa gradually on medium, wipe a few drops of oil with a paper towel for the first few uses, and let it cool completely before washing. Running cold water into a hot non-stick pan is the fastest way to warp it and crack the coating.

Wash with a soft sponge and a little dish soap. No steel scrubber, no dishwasher unless the listing says so. A coating that has started flaking should be retired — do not keep cooking on it.

Questions we get asked

Can I make dosa on an induction cooktop?

Only with an induction-compatible tawa — one with a steel base plate. A plain aluminium tawa will not heat on induction at all. The Prestige OSP IB and Cello models here list induction compatibility.

Why does my dosa stick to a new tawa?

Usually the tawa is too hot, or the coating has not been seasoned. Heat it gradually on medium, wipe with a little oil for the first few uses, and pour the batter when a drop of water sizzles rather than evaporates instantly.

How do I clean a non-stick dosa tawa?

Let it cool, then wash with a soft sponge and dish soap. Never use a steel scrubber or put it in a dishwasher, and dry it before stacking.
