Best Chopping Board
Updated 5 November 2026
A chopping board is the cheapest upgrade in the kitchen and the one most people get wrong. One board for onion, raw chicken and fruit is a cross-contamination problem; a board that slides on the counter is a knife-accident waiting to happen; a board that soaks up water warps and splits within a year.
The practical setup is two or three boards: one for raw meat and fish, one for vegetables, and optionally one for fruit and bread. Colour-coded plastic sets make that easy; bamboo is gentler on knives but needs oiling and must never be soaked.
These seven range from a ₹139 three-board plastic set to a ₹640 dishwasher-safe set, with prices checked on the date shown and ratings read from each listing. Stainless steel is included for meat, but it is hard on knife edges.

- A 33 × 20 cm surface is big enough for a full onion-and-tomato prep.

Herrlich Homes Stainless Steel Chopping Board, 31 × 21 cm
31 × 21 cm · Stainless steel · Anti-skid silicone pad
Best for: Hygienic prep of chicken and fish
- Steel does not absorb juices and wipes clean in seconds, which makes it the most hygienic board here.
- An anti-skid silicone pad keeps it steady on a wet counter.
- Unbreakable and rust-resistant, with a steel straw included.
Watch out: Steel blunts knives faster than plastic or bamboo — keep a separate board for daily vegetable chopping.

- Dishwasher-safe BPA-free plastic, which is the practical hygiene upgrade over hand-washing bamboo.
- Three reversible boards in different colours, so raw meat and vegetables never share a surface.
- A frosted, non-slip surface that holds food better than glossy plastic.
Watch out: Thin boards with a small cutting area per board; the most expensive plastic option here.

Plastic, bamboo or steel
Plastic is the hygienic default: it does not absorb juices, it can go in a dishwasher, and colour coding is easy. The downside is knife wear and the fact that deep grooves eventually harbour bacteria — replace a scarred board rather than scrubbing it.
Bamboo is harder than most woods and naturally antimicrobial, and it is gentler on knife edges than plastic. It needs hand washing, immediate drying and a periodic coat of food-safe mineral oil. Never soak it or put it in a dishwasher.
Stainless steel is the easiest to sanitise and the worst for knives. Use it for raw meat if hygiene is the priority, but do not chop vegetables on it daily unless you are happy sharpening more often.
| Material | Hygiene | Knife wear | Care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plastic | Good, dishwasher-safe | Moderate | Replace when deeply scored |
| Bamboo | Good if dried properly | Low | Hand wash, oil monthly |
| Stainless steel | Excellent | High | Wipe or wash, dry immediately |
Size, grip and the juice groove
A board needs to be bigger than the biggest thing you chop. For a family kitchen, 33 × 20 cm is the minimum; anything smaller and onion ends up on the counter. Thickness of 1 cm or more stops the board flexing under a knife.
Non-slip feet or a silicone pad matter more than they sound. A board that shifts while you are cutting is how people cut themselves. If the board has no grip, put a damp cloth underneath.
A juice groove is useful for roast chicken and tomatoes, but it also catches water in the dishwasher and can crack. For a board that will be washed often, a plain surface is easier to keep clean.
Questions we get asked
Do I need separate boards for meat and vegetables?
Yes. Raw chicken and fish carry bacteria that should not touch salad or fruit. Colour-coded boards make it automatic; at minimum, use one board for raw meat and another for everything else.
How do I stop a bamboo board from warping?
Never soak it or put it in a dishwasher. Wash it quickly, dry it standing on edge, and oil it with food-safe mineral oil once a month to stop it drying out unevenly.
When should I replace a plastic chopping board?
When the surface is deeply scored and no longer cleans easily. Scratches hold juices and bacteria, and a heavily scarred board cannot be sanitised reliably.
